The Monkey Project

A series of posters. The style is modern and borrows elements, like organic and geometric shapes, from the pop art of the 90s. The colors vary from nostalgic and muted naturals to bolder and more vibrant basics.

The focal symbol used throughout is the monkey which denotes intelligence in a lighthearted way. In Chinese traditional mythology, the monkey is an almighty, powerful, and protecting God. Thus, the aesthetic result is at the same time strong yet playful.

2016 was the year of the Monkey. Funnily enough, Monkey years are believed to be unlucky for people born in that Chinese Zodiac year. Fortunately, I am not one of those people, not that I take Chinese astrology all that seriously…

Anyway, some time ago I felt that I wasn’t reaching my full creative potential and felt the need to delve into deeper, more invigorating artistic endeavors. While I was tapping into my creative realm looking for something to get my creative juices flowing again, the year of the Monkey popped into my head.

For a strange reason, monkeys have always been a recurring symbol in my life, one way or another, so it was pretty obvious that this was one concept that had the inherent allure to spark my imagination.

“No limits!” I said to myself. Whatever I want to design, I will. No need for a specific style, no need for consistency (except for the monkey symbol...duh!), and no set rules.
